Sale,

Omer Levesque,

Post War, Korea, and Cold War
Cold War
In July, he took up duties at CFB Chatham as the CFI (Commander Fighter Instructors) with No. 1 (F) OTU. He was awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal in 1953. Later he flew Canadair Sabres with 4 Wing in Europe and worked at Air Division HQ in Metz. While there he was instrumental in securing the French base at Rabat for the RCAF as a gunnery base. The deal was cooked up over a bottle of beer. The French officer promised that if Levesque got him a check-out on the Canadair Sabre, he would see that a deal for Rabat was taken care of.

1954 – Rabat, French Morocco – National Archives of Canada

On February 8, 1954, we took off from Rabat Salé in what was then “French” Morocco, heading for Oran in Algeria, Istres in France, and finally on to 3 (F) Wing at Zweibrücken, Germany. Due to the short range of the Mk II Sabre (we could carry only 100 gal drop tanks), therefore, a stop at Oran prior to transiting the Mediterranean was a necessity.
434 Squadron was the first RCAF squadron to make use of Rabat for air-to-air gunnery and the living conditions were rather primitive. Later on, each squadron helped improved some of the facilities, while on deployment such as: toilet seats over the “holes”, proper pillows and mattresses, etc. In any case, the weather was lousy during our 2-week stay and we only got 4 to 6 gunnery sorties each, some of them not successful due to technical and “finger” problems.

Memories of Oran, Algeria - Assorted Sources

The RCAF was flying F-86 Sabre Mk II aircraft in 1954 and as a result, they could only carry 100 gallon drop tanks. Due to the short range of the aircraft, it was necessary to stop at Oran in Algeria - when flying to or from Rabat.
As a rule, the Sabres would depart their home base and proceed to Istres in southern France, and then continue to Oran for refuelling prior to their final destination at Rabat.

Souvenirs d'Oran,
