The Last Synagogue of Afghanistan
Herat, Afghanistan was once home to a thriving Jewish community that counted six synagogues, including the Yu Aw Synagogue featured here. The majority of Afghani Jews left as a result of the Soviet invasion in 1979 but they left an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of the larger community, some of whom worked for years to try to protect and care for Jewish properties left behind. Despite years of conflict and war, the Yu Wa Synagogue was partially restored and served as a primary school for boys and girls. We pray that this sacred, once Jewish space, is able to continue serving as a home for learning, especially for young Afghani girls whose futures are at risk. Holding prayers for peace and security in our hearts for all those in Afghanistan who have risked so much to improve the well-being of their families, their communities, their land, and their country.
