In
1912, the protection of the city of Fez was guaranteed by "locals"
deputized into the french army.
When the military authorities decide to cut down their pay, the
recruits mutiny and the tabors, followed by the population, massacre
their superior officers and any other european in their path.
Then they turned to the mellah , where lived more than 10 000 jews
, and where their attacks quickly turn in pogroms.
The neighborhood is looted, ransacked and torched in part.
The jewish community will suffer 200 deaths.
Warned, the Sultan will open the doors to one of his palaces to
provide shelter to the survivors.
They would stay there for 15 days until the calm was restored.
