In Morocco, Exploring Remnants of Jewish History

Although as many as 240,000 Jews lived in Morocco as recently as the 1940s, only around 3,000 remain in the country today. Youness and I had not come to look for the Jews; we had come to look for the traces they left behind.

Fabriquer de la Mahia a New York

Nahmias, who with his wife Dorit co-founded Nahmias et Fils distillery just north of New York City, hooked up a pump to the plastic tank and began transporting the fig mash into a giant copper still that would filter the alcohol into a drinkable, 80-proof firewater called mahia.

Mint Tea and Minarets: A Banquet of Moroccan Memories

Behold, a singular structure soars above the banks of the Oum er-Rbia, Mother of Spring River, within the ramparts of the 16thcentury medina of Azemmour — Dar Zitoun, erstwhile “House of the Pasha.” Into her late father’s painstakingly restored riad, Moorish mansion, the author of Mint Tea and Minarets, an expert on Moroccan cuisine and heir to the property, warmly coaxes you.

The Expulsion of the Jews from Muslim Countries, 1920-1970: A History of Ongoing Cruelty and Discrimination, by Shmuel Trigano

Between 1920 and 1970, 900,000 Jews were expelled from Arab and other Muslim countries. The 1940s were a turning point in this tragedy; of those expelled, 600,000 settled in the new state of Israel, and 300,000 in France and the United States.

REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST: MOROCCANS TALK ABOUT THE JEWS WHO ONCE LIVED AMONG THEM

Aomar Boum, an anthropologist at the University of Arizona, did meet Jews growing up in Morocco—that is, once he moved from his small village in the Anti-Atlas mountains to the city of Marrakesh for school.

Rise of the International Financial Center: Can Casablanca Emulate Dubai’s Success? by Jed Halfon and Mohammad Rustom

Since its launch in 2004, the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) has grown steadily and is now classified as a global contender, according to the March 2013 Global Financial Centres Index, alongside Beijing and Moscow. This success has not gone unnoticed in Casablanca, which seeks to emulate Dubai’s example in hopes of attracting foreign investment and bulge-bracket financial institutions.

The Moroccan-Jewish experience and why I have hope for peace in the Middle East - By Charles Dahan

Jews have lived and prospered in Morocco for at least 2,000 years, and Morocco’s 2011 Constitution officially recognizes the Jewish influences that have “nourished and enriched” the national identity.

Secretary of State John Kerry has made it his personal mission to revive peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine. Yet many wonder: after so much loss and pain, can there ever be peace? Can Jews and Muslims ever coexist?

Exodus: Jewish Morocco par Aaron Vincent Elkaim - Photos Magnifiques

Jews first arrived to the land now known as Morocco over 2000 years ago.  Protected under the Islamic Principle of Tolerance since the 7th century, they flourished, holding high positions in trade and government.  The Star of David was a symbol shared by all Moroccans, appearing on currency and even the national flag.
