by Kamal Hachkar

When Muslim and Jews from Morocco reweave ties of conviviality                                                through art

BACK TO TINGHIR: RETURN TO THE NATIVE LAND (working title) By Kamal Hachkar

In his first film, "Tinghir-Jerusalem, echoes from the Mellah" (2011), filmmaker Kamal Hachkar told the story of the Jewish community of Tinghir, Morocco, who, after having been rooted there for centuries, left in the 1950s and 1960s to emigrate to Israel. Hachkar, a Muslim Berber (Amazigh) born in Tinghir, moved as a child with his family to France. Returning to Tinghir every summer to visit his family, he was told the stories of his hometown, and of the Jews of Tinghir by his grandfather and grandmother, and the other elders in town. In his award-winning documentary which retraces the lost history of this Jewish community, Hachkar embarked on a journey of discovery, encountering colorful characters along the way, both in Morocco and in Israel, whose voices, songs and stories powerfully resonate, evoking the contours of a common culture, shared by both Jews and Muslims. For his second film, Kamal Hachkar continues to explore this multifaceted memory, through the portrait of the third generation of Jewish and Muslim artists who keep alive this common heritage and celebrate the plurality of Moroccan identities. This film faces the fatality and irreversibility of history that separated our parents from one another, and opens paths to those who today are committed to reverse this historical narrative, to rebuild bridges and reweave ties of conviviality, and to write a new chapter recreating togetherness and a sense of continued and shared destiny.

Synopsis :

"Return of the Native Land" is the portrait of the third generation of Moroccan Jews and Muslims who continue to perpetuate a common heritage through the arts - music, painting, writing. What is the Native Land? How to wrestle with the idea that we cannot live where our roots once were? Can these artists find in the Arab-Berber culture answers to the questions they have about their identity? Their dream is to return and walk in the footsteps of their families and live for a while in Morocco to hone their craft and obtain Moroccan citizenship. It is for them a way to repair the wounds of exile: these artists symbolize this young generation that carries with them the proud heritage of their grandparents and parents born in Morocco. Little by little, tracing a portrait of these artists, the film will unveil a mosaic of plural Moroccan identities that is emerging, a kaleidoscope of diverse experiences of those who dream, sing, paint and fantasize their Morocco. After Tinghir-Jerusalem : echoes from the mellah, and with the portrait of this third generation in Israel in the United States in Canada, or in France, suddenly the dream to recreate bridges with Morocco, takes shape and becomes reality.

Shooting phases :

The film will be shot in six phases, from June to December 2015. We will unveil each phase one after the next, throughout the journey. For this first fundraising campaign, we are asking you to contribute to the first two phases, which will unfold in June and July 2015. If our fundraising efforts are successful and we obtain more than needed for these first two phases, the surplus will be used for the next steps.

Phase 1 :  Gibraltar, June 15-20 (5 days) Gibraltar World Music Festival celebrates the cultural plurality of Morocco. The festival opens with the screening of Tinghir-Jerusalem, my first film. Gibraltar is a symbol of perfect harmony between Jews and Muslims. Jewish and Muslim artists will present a performance built around the concept of convivencia - with a Moroccan souk reconstituted between the synagogue and the mosque, in the old city, where the shops of Jewish and Muslim merchants coexist next to each other. Between the rehearsals and the performance, we will interview the artists about their relationship with Morocco, in the horizon, as a land between dream and reality, and a source of inspiration for their art.

Phase 2: Road movie in Morocco, July 20-30 (10 days) Two artists, Neta and Amit, from Jerusalem are embarking on a journey, a quest of their roots, along a road movie taking them through Tarifa, Tangiers. Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Essaouira, Tinghir and other towns and villages in the High Atlas. Facing the reality of Morocco, meeting other Jews, some of whom have returned, some of whom have never left, meeting Muslim artists who continue to keep alive their common heritage. Neta and Amit's dream is to collaborate with Muslim musicians.

Risks and challenges
